Who Built The Pyramids

I find this text to be very intresting on how Mike views his own work lifestyle. I find it ammusing how he takes his job as a laborer a joke but at the same time he talks about how he hates building and pulling steels and works long hours with low pay. Mike use to work for a truker and on a truck dock. Mikes work is more than just work he is basically constructing buildings and doing most of the work, but gets no crediet for it, even though he feels that his name should be imprinted on a bricklayer so he can feel some type of gratitude of the work that he has done. Mike compares the foremans as hitler because they walk around in suits telling everyone what do, but at the same time he hopes to see his son walking around in those suits one day. He hopes that his work hours would be shorten. Mike would love to have a twenty hour work week to get to spend more time with his family and he would have time to do whatever he wants. Mike mentions he wants his son to be an effete snob. I honestly couldnt agree more with that. What i got out of that statement is that mike wants his son to be something he is not. He wants his kid to go to college and work his but off so he can be that guy telling people what do do and how to do things. Mike wants his kid to realize what mike is doing as a living is not what he should be doing. Instead he should of gone to college and be the man hiring people to work for him. He wants his son to be one of those people he dislike from his jobs, that he wants to curse at but knows he cant. The reason Mike is working is for his kid to become someone better than he is .

  1. Good overview - I think you've picked up on a central tension here: he wants his son to have a different life, perhaps to be the boss. But does he think this is "better"? In what ways does he think it is and isn't?
