assignment for sept 16

In the passage , "Who Built the Pyramids" from Studs' Terkels' Working Mike is a working man who works in a steel mill. His job is too lift and pull steel. According to Mike he feels how can he get excited about pulling steel. He doesn't get the excitement of his job as well because he never gets to see his results. For example he says its hard to take pride for his job anymore because he wont get the change to walk across a bridge he helped built or even open a door he made. From working so much also feels he wants change. what Mikes wants most to change is to have something to point that he has done. An author can point to a book he feels one he want to point to a building a say he put that steel beam in. He would like to see a building say the Empire State building . Mike also wants to take his kids out to see other things in the world and get them to college. Other workers on the other hand don't see things the way mike does . Mike does not want his son to work in a factory he would rather his son quote Walt Whitman and be proud of it. Mike states he wants his son so to be "an effete snob" not be like him but to have value and pride in whatever he does. Mike sees it as just like the world or any parent today would work hard for a better living for your kids. This is interesting because most parents today or maybe even back then wouldnt of had a strong or positive mind as Mike does about the future of their kids.

  1. Really interesting, especially what you also mentioned in class today about Mike being different from his co-workers. Is there a section of the interview you would bring in to support that idea? I also think you're getting at something interesting in your last sentence: while it's true that all -or at least most parents want what's best for their kids and sacrifice for it, wanting him to be someone who might not respect you is a whole different kind of sacrifice . . .
