Summary of Blue-Collar Brillianc In Two Parts.

Mike  Rose is arguing against the concept or the idea of workers in no need of an intellegnce and thought for their work. Through the history till today, it is in our cultural belief  that a person's intellegence is associated with  the type of schooling  he had  and how much and how long  he studied. It is always believed that workers need  less schooling and lesss inteligence. But in reality Mike's uncle Joe Meraglio, who left school in nineth grade to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad and from their he joined Navy and later joined his older brother at General Motors. Over 33 years of  careers in General  Motors, with his experience  and intelligence, he moved from assembly line to supervising the paint and body part deparment.Joe  says that the the shop floor was like a school where he learns constantly. As he keeps working and learning in auto industry and with furthe promotions, he not only sloved problem but strat finding problem. He also argues that blue -worker's use their intelligence and brain to successfuly do their work.He does it by knowing the characteristics of  the material one is engaging.- how it reacts to varios cutting or compressing devices,to degree of heat or lines of  force. In nut shell workers in every walk of life needs planning ,interacting, negotiation extra.

Most people  think that work requires less schooling and less intelligence. We separate our mind from body and thinking that operating on tools doesnot need thinking and planing. We tend  to decide  a persons fate by how  much grade he has and numbers on IQ  test. Writers and schloars have often looked at the working class as a mere physical worker and  ignoring the thinking and the strategic of the work. Though many kinds of physical work don't require a high literacy level, more reading occurs in the blue- collar workplace  than generally thought , from manuals and catalogues to work orders and invoice, to list , labels ,and  forms. If we take everyday  work  very easy without a second thought, then it will affect the  work we create in future.

  1. Good overview. Be sure to be very clear about when you are quoting directly from the text and mark it with quotation marks. We will talk more about how to introduce quotations in class this week.
