Assignment for Monday,September 16th
The passage "Who Built the Pyramids" was about a laborer named Mike. Mike is a thirty-seven year old man who works in a steel mill. Mike feels that he can't take pride in the work that he does because when you're mass producing things you never get to see the outcome of the product you made. Mike also, doesn't get excited about his job because all he does is pull steel and it tires him out doing the same thing over and over again. The one thing that Mike would like to change about his job is the fact that he doesn't get recognized for the work that he produces by other people. Mike really wants to be able to point at something and say "look over there, you see that? I made it." When Mike says "I want my kid to be an effete snob", he means that he wants his kid to do better then he has done for himself. He wants his kid to have higher expectations for himself, bigger goals and brighter dreams. The reason why Mike wants his kid to have that mindset is because he doesn't want his kid to end up like he has. This is interesting because not many parents say they want their kid to be snobby. Also, Mike complained about the college student he was working with because he felt as if the student belittled him by calling the hard working men that pay somebody else's way through college "dummies". However, when Mike says he wants his kid to be an "effete snob" he doesn't mean that he want his kid to be a jerk but he wants them to make a better living for themselves then he has. All Mike wants is the best for his kid, just as any parent would want.

Good overview - do you think he believes his son can be successful without being a jerk or a snob? How do you think he might define "higher expectations or bigger goals"?
