The article “Exploring the Managed
Heart “By Arlie Russel Hochschild is
about the comparison a child laborer who works in a wallpaper factory and the
work of a flight attendant. Both workers are used as “instrumental labor”. They
have to show both their physical and looks as strength to their job. These
types of jobs show emotional labor.
Emotional labors according to these
passages are based on to have to hide your actual real feeling and put your job
before yourself. For example, working as a flight attendant you are trained to
do your job in a perfect matter and look a certain way. This job changes your
whole outlook it’s like you’re a whole different person including mindset as
well which is true. You can’t show expression which can affect your customers negatively.
Being a factory worker you have to set aside you feeling as well and get your
work done no matter what. not letting the fact that you are a young boy and get
no respect from people who have higher job positions Both jobs are similar because
it consists of pretending. The connection of both jobs is to not be yourself and
to fulfill the position you are working for.
I think the flight attendant job is worse
because it has more of pretending to be someone you not. Being a flight
attending you have to dress speak and act according to the job. Being a different
person that you can’t even relate to and having to keep people happy knowing you’re
not happy I believe is hard. Even if this job is not as physical as a factory
worker it is emotionally and mentally as one. This job being a flight attendant
is alienated because you have to set aside your real personality to create
another one. Around this time period you did not get as much respect either having
this job title. You would have to be who you really are to get treated with the
respect you deserve or at all. How would you feel flip flopping from
personality to personality? I believe that alienations.
Hi Jennifer - Really good job working through your understanding of this reading. We're going to work on this more in class, but you can make your writing a lot stronger by working on VERBS. Look at the ones on p. 39-40 of They Say: very often these will make a sentence stronger rather than using "is/are." For example, look at your first sentence: "The article “Exploring the Managed Heart “By Arlie Russel Hochschild is about the comparison a child laborer who works in a wallpaper factory and the work of a flight attendant." Can you rewrite with "compare" as your very instead of "is."?
