Discussion Thread: Your Books

In the comments below, give an update on your book search.

- Have you checked a book out of the library or ordered one from another campus?

- If so, have you decided if it's the book for you? What's leading you to that decision? If not, start looking at alternatives.

- If not, is there a book you think you're interested in that's not in the library. I will help you find a copy.

If you have the book you want use, start reading. Try to read a little everyday. Take it with you on the subway. Read while you're standing in line. Take notes in a reading journal - we'll be posting some online as well. Keep in mind the clues we discussed in class: the information about the author, publisher, date, introduction, and chapter outline.

Bring your books to class everyday until the end of the semester. Keep an eye out for when/if you need to renew them.

  1. The book that I'm going to continue with is fast food nation because the content seems interesting and I also want to know more about it. The content "what's in the Meat?, that question really caught my eye.

By the way, I have signed up for Nov 23rd at 1:30pm for the cat-w exam

  2. The book I've started reading is "Disposable People" by Kevin Bales. The author emphasizes that slavery is supposedly illegal throughout the world but he personally estimates that there are at least 27 million people who are currently enslaved. I believe this is the book I would like to use because it is interesting and goes under the topic of international views on labor.

  3. Global Woman by :Barbara Ehrenreich Arlie Russell Hochschild ,as not stimulated me in the slightest due to the fact that I'm looking for something with more of a interesting story to it. Something with more of a relatable story that I can sit and read and not want to put it down. Also I'm not exactly sure what book to catch my interest so I was wondering if u could please give me help on this issue.

  4. I choose the "FAST FOOD NATIONS "because when read the contents, there are some contents that are very curious to know more about. When we go to Mcdonalds sa soon as we ask the kids , what they like to have they say fries and even as an adult we eat this often. The author put the question, "why fries taste good" and also whats in the Meat.

For example it telled about the issue, the data, and the global economy of it. it the begining the author ask a question to the reading saying "what is a child, what is labor, and what is entail work?" Also I keep on reading these questions are on the end of my mind.

  9. The book I'm reading is called "Equal Play". I am interested in it because it has a lot of information about the time period right after title IX of the amendments of education of 1972 and to the present time. It shows just how much women struggled to fight for legislation for equal rights in sports, and also it shows how much they struggled after to get it properly enforced.

  10. I am STILL having problems with my book. Which I will soon resolve, how ever I did manage to pick a book called "The Spirit Level" by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Picks. The books catches my attention because it was written by both a man an women, therefore there are two sides. Instead of leaning towards one side.

  11. I am reading "THE SECOND SHIFT" by Arlie Russell Hochschild, the author of the"Time Bind" recommended from our professor .I likes this book and it's getting interesting.Actually it's about the parent who try to take their responsibility at home but the mother seems to do much more work than the father. And she is doing double work at home as well as outside so that's why it is arguing about the working who takes on the second shift.

  13. the book i resorted to choosing and am now currently reading is fast food nations, after i was having trouble finding a book that resonated with me. my decision was based on my prior interest in the fast food industry and the way they go about their business. the different aspects of adversity such as standard wage and food quality should make for interesting topics. i am looking forward to incorporating the documentary super size me into my third essay.
